Are you thinking of moving your own belongings when you relocate? If so, there are few things you’ll need to keep in mind to keep yourself safe while doing so. At Behrens Moving Company, we’re experienced Milwaukee long-distance movers who know the ins and outs of the moving industry. Not only are we equipped to move customers’ belongings, we’re also happy to share tips to help them stay safe should they choose to handle their move on their own.
Don't Overload Boxes
An important reminder is to not overload your boxes when packing them. While your first instinct may be to try to put as much as possible in a box to save on packing supplies, making your boxes too heavy will not only make things more difficult in the long run, but it can create a dangerous situation. Ensure each box can be easily lifted. Use two people to lift whenever necessary, and you can also use assistive devices like straps and dollies to lighten the load.
Dress in Loose-Fitting Clothing
Don’t forget to dress appropriately for moving day. Suitable attire includes stretchy, athletic clothing that you can move comfortably in and closed-toe shoes with great traction. Make sure your clothing isn’t too baggy or it might become a hindrance (for example, long sleeves can get in the way when you’re trying to get a good grip on a box).
Stretch in the Morning
Do a few stretches before jumping into action. These can include quad stretches, shoulder rolls, and lunges. When lifting items, try to stand as close to them as possible, keeping a neutral spine. Be sure to lift with your legs (not your back).
Follow Proper Lifting Techniques
Keep your back from twisting as you move, and instead, pivot with your feet to keep your balance and to protect your spine from injuries. When you’re ready to set down an item, slowly lower it to the ground, bending your knees as you do so. This slow, controlled motion will help prevent placing stress on your back.
Throughout the day, remain hydrated and be sure to eat plenty of meals. Keep protein-rich snacks close by to supply your body with a steady energy source while you work.
